From a temporary forest to a permanent legacy

Vicenza, Cristiano Spiller, Gianluca Cosaro representing Fondazione Gabaldo, and Marcella Gabbiani for ALA Assoarchitetti & Ingegneri and the Dedalo Minosse International Prize. The initiative is part of a broader framework of collaboration between Fondazione Gabaldo and the Municipality of Vicenza, which also includes the "Masterplan for Urban Green in Vicenza", currently being developed at the Politecnico di Milano: a strategic plan aimed at improving environmental sustainability and guiding the development and management of urban green spaces.
The trees, already planted on March 27, include ginkgo biloba, maples (rubrum and atropurpureum), "Rainwood" ashes, liquidambar, poplars, and camphor trees-species capable of offering seasonal variations in color and evocative landscape effects over time, contributing to the overall quality of the area.
The trees originate from the installation created for the award ceremony of the 13th edition of the Dedalo Minosse International Prize, during which 25 outstanding clients were selected from over 400 applications and more than 70 finalist projects. For the first time, the Basilica Palladiana hosted an installation that integrated a true temporary forest composed of large trees, creating a striking natural narrative of evergreen and changing foliage, symbolizing the continuous transformation of the seasons.
Today, thanks to the collaboration between ALA Assoarchitetti & Ingegneri, Fondazione Gabaldo, Giorgio Tesi Group, and the Municipality of Vicenza, these trees have found a new permanent home. This initiative combines environmental and cultural value, transforming a temporary installation into a tangible legacy for the city.
Fondazione Gabaldo oversaw the transfer and management of the trees during the winter months and will take care of their maintenance over the next two years, also ensuring the replacement of any specimens that may fail to take root.
"Seeing these trees, which with their charm transformed the Basilica Palladiana into a suspended forest for several days, finally find their permanent home represents, for us, the completion of a perfect cycle," said Marco Cappellini, General Director of Giorgio Tesi Group. "Our participation in this initiative was not limited to the creation of a temporary installation, but rather represents a sort of ‘green legacy’ that we leave to the city of Vicenza. It is proof that the beauty of architecture and the strength of nature can work together towards concrete urban regeneration."
